10 Mar SNAU launches European crayfish rearing project

This initiative aims to explore the cultivation of this species under artificial conditions, develop efficient husbandry techniques, and improve methods for population restoration. Established with funding from the international AFISHE Erasmus+ project, the Aquaculture Laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge technology for research on freshwater fish and crustaceans. During these three days, the partners gathered at the Rectorate of the University to discuss the progress of each work package and agree on the next steps for AFISHE, which will be completed by the end of 2025. The group had the opportunity to visit CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research), a U.Porto facility whose aim is to assess the impact of human activities and develop strategies to address global environmental change. During the programme, the future laboratory assistants were able to gain practical experience with the most modern equipment used in fisheries laboratories. The skills and knowledge gained are invaluable for improving the students' laboratory practicals and supporting faculty members research endeavours of faculty members. The trainers are experts in the field of aquaculture and fish farming: Anastasia Horetska and Oleksiy Lemeshko from "Laursen Aquaculture" LLC - maintenance of water quality and maintenance of laboratory equipment; Ivan Targonii, individual entrepreneur – training on setting up and operating production processes in the fish feed production line. The laboratory will be a practical base for students starting their studies at NUWEE in 2024-2025 as part of the AFISHE project's updated Master's programme.
